  • The Graduate Programme in Sociology is designed to provide advanced sociological knowledge, perspectives and skills to wide cross sections of the learners.
  • This course has also aim to enhance the skills, capabilities and employment opportunities of the students in educational, research institutions and NGOs
  • To develop and in-built the capacity of the students to communicate effectively and use of sociological knowledge for better society.
  • This course has aim to make student rational, logical and critical and to develop their analytical skill of the social issues and events
  • This course is designed to provide basic and advanced theoretical as well as methodological knowledge of sociology for application.

Sociology Objectives


  • To teach students the concepts, theories, and methods of the behavioral and social services.
  • To introduce students to the basic social processes of society, social institutions and patterns of social behavior.
  • To train students to understand and to interpret objectively the role of social processes, social institutions and social interactions in their lives.
  • To enable students to cope effectively with the socio-cultural and interpersonal processes of a constantly changing complex society.
  • To train students for positions in criminal justice, gerontology, social science and social welfare.
  • To prepare students for graduate study.
  • To strengthen the marketable expertise in quantitative analysis and computer applications in advertising, demography, marketing and the social sciences.

Requirements


The program requires a minimum of 120 semester hours for a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. This includes the general education and institutional requirements, sociology required courses and sociology electives.

Mission & Learning Outcomes


The mission of the Department of Sociology is to provide a program that encourages our students to develop intellectually, professionally, and socially. We strive to provide a curriculum that is rigorous, relevant, and robust for the growing and changing needs of our community, nation, and global world. The faculty teach our students the research, interpretative and critical skills necessary to understand and analyze social phenomena, as well as foster a lifelong commitment to be a responsive member in their community. We offer our students direct opportunities to apply sociological knowledge and skills through an internship at various agencies and/or non-profit organizations. Upon completion of a B.A. in Sociology, our students will leave our program with hands-on, marketable skills and experiences that prepares them for a variety of career paths and/or graduate school.

Produce graduates with a competent understanding of the socio-cultural forces, theoretical perspectives, and research methods that comprise a sociological perspective on society and social life.

  • Be able to compare and contrast major theoretical constructs in Sociology.
  • Be able to articulate sociological questions pertaining to culture, institutions, social structure, individual behavior, and the relationships between them.
  • Be able to articulate the assumptions and limitations of quantitative and qualitative research approaches and critically assess the empirical research of others.
  • Be able to describe the ways in which inequities by ethnicity, gender, age, and sexual orientation impact our social world.
